Three Decisions to Make Before You Publish Your Ebook

In recent years, the number of ebooks published online has soared as people have learned more about how useful they can be, particularly when compared to traditional publishing methods. Unlike traditional books, ebooks are very cheap to publish, can be published quickly, and are available instantly to buyers without incurring expensive shipping and handling charges.

But if you are interested in producing your own ebook, there are certain decisions you need to make prior to publishing your book, in order to make sure your ebook is successful in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Here are five different issues you need to decide before you publish your ebook:

  1. To start, you will need to decide what kind of format you want to publish your book in. There are two basic formats quite popular with ebook publishers today – PDF and HTML executable files. PDF is probably the preferred format, and it is very easy to create a PDF file. For example, if you have Open Office you can just export your document to PDF format.  Adobe Acrobat is the industry standard for creating PDF’s and it may be worth investing in, as it comes with additional security features not available in many free PDF makers – such as the ability to disable copy and paste functions, making the intellectual theft of your ebook a bit more difficult.

However, for those who want more control over the circulation and distribution of their ebooks, publishing the book as an HTML executable (.EXE) file may be preferred. To do this, you will need to invest in a ebook publishing software program called an “ebook compiler.”

These programs often have advanced security features, such as the ability to disable or “lock” a book after it has been purchased, if it is found it is being distributed illegally. Some also allow you to register the book to a single user or computer, to also prevent the unauthorized transfer of the ebook. HTML based ebooks can also be more dynamic than a PDF ebook, allowing you to integrate advanced imaging features into the document. Your user will also not need any special software on their computer to read the ebook.
  2. After deciding on the format for your ebook, your next step will be to decide how you want to distribute the book. Will you be selling it on your own website, or will you be working with an online marketplace (like ClickBank) to market your book? If you decide to sell it on your own website, you will need to look into credit card payment systems for your website.
  3. After you have taken the basic steps to determine how you will publish and make your ebook available to the public, you are ready to sit down and do the hard part: actually write the ebook – or hire someone else to do this for you. One thing to remember: your time is one of your most valuable resources, and if you find writing to be a challenge, you should consider outsourcing the writer to a qualified professional or a team of professional. You can learn more about how to properly outsource your ebook quickly and successfully in The 7 Book Ebook guide.

Once you have settled on your decisions for these three basics of ebook publishing, you are ready to move forward! For even more tips on how to successfully publish an ebook, you can also read “How to Write Ebooks.”

Recently I was asked about what kind of printer I use in my home office. Although this is not directly related to ebook publishing software or ebook cover software, I thought I would write a short review discussing my current home printer: the HP Officejet J4580.

The HP Officejet J4580 is a combination all-in-one, color printer, color scanner, color photo copier, and fax machine. It is produced by Hewlett Packard, a company that has been in operation for many years, and a name closely associated with high quality computer printers. The HP Officejet J4580 uses thermal inkjet technology to produce very high resolution color prints of up to 4800 x 1200 dots per inch. It it is low in power consumption and has an Energy Star certification.

The HP Officejet J4580 is aimed at the home office market where space may be a consideration, and where an all-in-one solution of printer, scanner, copier and fax is likely to be a very attractive proposition.

Convenience of Multiple Functions in One Unit

Where office space is limited, perhaps in the case of a home office, the HP Officejet J4580 really comes into its own. It is effectively four units in one: a printer, photocopier, scanner and fax. This means that everything you need is in one place, and just by clicking a button you can choose which function to use once it is all connected up.

Low-Cost Printing and Intelligent Technology

The HP Officejet J4580 offers a very low cost consumption in stand-by mode of just 2.8 watts. It has Energy Star certification, of course, and it offers a degree of efficiency and economy that many other printers can only dream of. It knows when the ink is low and needs to be replaced, but then most printers do. Where the HP Officejet J4580 differs is in the fact that it lets you order more ink right from your desktop immediately.

Features and Specifications

* The HP Officejet J4580 is a high-performance all-in-one color inkjet printer. It can operate as a photo copier, scanner, and a fax machine.

* It can print at speeds of up to 28 pages per minute.

* It can print borderless photos that measure up to 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches long.

* It has a maximum color print resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi and a maximum black and white print resolution of 600 x 600 dpi.

* It features a 20-page automatic document feeder and a 100-sheet paper tray.

* The printer measures 17.07 inches long by 15.81 inches wide by 8.53 inches deep and weighs 13.03 pounds.

* It has a 1-year limited warranty.

Other Customer Reviews and Scores

There are 135 customer reviews on Amazon at the time of writing. They have scored the HP Officejet J4580 2.7 out of 5 stars on average. (This is not the best rating for a printer at Amazon.com). Here are sample comments by other users of this printer:

One customer said, “…the printer being the slowest I’ve ever owned in the (9) HP’s I have purchased, it seems to print slow but very good quality printing.”

There could be many reasons why the printer prints slowly (one reason could be related to the computer it is connected to). Other customers had comments such as, “I always choose HP printers, but this one is especially great,” “Great value, not perfect, but good solid machine,” and, “Good Printer, I think you will like it.”

In my experience, this printer has served me well, and I would recommend it to other users.
